House : Tartana — El Palmar (Albufera), Valence

Rice from a farming family in the Albufera. Tartana is the «els Gorets» family, who have grown rice in the Albufera Natural Park near Valencia since the late 19th century – today the fifth generation. Transplanting and weeding are still done by hand.

The Albufera variety was bred in Sueca by the Valencian Institute for Agricultural Research (IVIA), from a cross between Bomba and Senia. Its compact grain stays firm as it cooks and soaks up stock well: the most balanced grain in the range.

What for: paella, dry rice dishes and oven-baked rice. It also works for creamy and brothy rice.

Protected designation of origin D.O. Arroz de Valencia. 1 kg bag.

Why we chose it: it comes straight from the people who grow it: the “els Gorets” family in the Albufera Natural Park, who still transplant and weed by hand. The Albufera variety, bred in Sueca from a cross between Bomba and Senia, is protected by the D.O. Arroz de Valencia. It is the rice we recommend for paella and oven-baked rice.
